Fuel problems cause a large share of generator failures. Gasoline breaks down over time and leaves varnish and deposits in the tank and carburetor. Standby generators on natural gas or propane can have supply, regulator or valve problems.
- Stale fuel and varnish in the tank and carburetor
- A clogged fuel filter or fuel line
- A cracked or leaking fuel line
- A closed fuel valve or low fuel pressure
- A regulator problem on natural gas or propane units
If you smell fuel, do not try to start the generator. Shut off the fuel supply if it is safe to do so and call for help. Repairs include draining and cleaning the system, replacing filters and lines, and testing the generator under load.
